The bodies and wreckage from the SS Portland wash ashore on the back side of Cape Cod. Wreckage and the deceased are discovered from Provincetown to Orleans.

 

WRECK SITE (about 20 miles north of the tip of Cape Cod)

The wreck of the SS Portland lies on Steadwell Bank, a large underwater sandbar in Massachusetts Bay. The ship is 460 feet below water. She sits upright on the bottom, her distinctive “A” frame that drove her paddles is still recognizable.

The SS Portland is spotted from the lighthouse on Thatcher’s Island, it is believed that this is the closest the vessel came to the City of Portland before the weather forced the Captain to change course.
